ABOUT
US.

A community hotel built by hand, inspired by the mountains, and made for people to gather.

Genbe began with a simple idea: to create a place where people can come together. Nestled in the village of Nozawa Onsen, we believe a hotel can be more than somewhere to stay. It can be a place to meet new people, share stories, discover local culture, learn something new, and leave feeling connected—to both the place and the people.

Nozawa has always been shaped by its mountains, natural hot springs, and strong sense of community. For generations, artists, makers, and travelers have found inspiration here.

Visionary artist Taro Okamoto was captivated by the village’s unique spirit, while renowned woodblock print artist Shikō Munakata visited Nozawa and met master craftsman Heisaku Kōno, creator of the village’s iconic Hatoguruma.

Their exchange of handmade gifts is a reminder that creativity is not only something we admire—it is something we share, preserve, and pass on. That philosophy is at the heart of Genbe.

Genbe is, and always will be, a work in progress. Much of what you’ll find here has been designed, built, restored, or created by hand alongside our friends, local makers, and community. We believe there is beauty in making things yourself, learning as you go, and creating a place that continues to grow with the people who are part of it.

Throughout the year, we welcome artists, makers, creatives, and our local community. Through exhibitions, workshops, pop-ups, shared meals, music, and seasonal gatherings, we hope to create opportunities for people to meet, collaborate, and inspire one another.

We believe handmade crafts, traditional knowledge, and the spirit of making things by hand deserve to be carried into the future. Whether it’s restoring an old building, learning a traditional craft, or creating something entirely new, every project is an opportunity to connect with the people, stories, and traditions that make Nozawa so special.

As the seasons change, so does Genbe. Winter brings people together through Nozawa’s world-renowned snow, while the green season offers new ways to experience the village through art, workshops, food, wellness, and community.

Welcome to genbe.
